Muslim bodies demand new appointment of chairperson for MSMC

IMPHAL, March 15: Manipur State Minorities Commission is one the Commissions which had been established by the state Government for welfare of the minority communities but it has belied the expectations and failed to achieve what it was created for, alleged a  joint Statement signed by different Muslim organisations of Manipur, including AMMDO, MMWO, UMDO, PSO and AMMWCO.

This Commission started functioning from the year 2004 as one man Commission headed by a retired IAS officer, Shri A. Halim Chowdhury and the same person who is above 90 years age has been working as the Chairperson since its inception.

The statement further lamented that the Commission has remained defunct because of it.  They also appeal to the Government to appoint a new suitable person as Chairperson of the Commission preferably from the eminent Muslim social workers who are well-versed in the issues of the Minorities and who have also got administrative experience.

In this connection, it is to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned that if the term of the Office of the present Chairperson is extended for another term of 3 years, legal action will be sought.

The joint organisations has threatened to launch different kinds of agitations will also be taken up in co-operation with many civil organizations in the State if their demands are not met, added the statement.
