Angry locals lobbed petrol bomb at Wangoi PS

IMPHAL, March 1: Unrest over the custodial death of a 37-year-old at Wangoi continued for the fourth consecutive day today as protestors lobbed petrol bombs at the Wangoi Police Station in an unsuccessful bid to set the station on fire.

Protestors had imposed a 48 hour bandh along the Mayai Lambi since yesterday midnight against the death.

37-year-old Thoudam Digbijoy of Wangoi Makha Leikai was found dead inside the police lock up on the morning of February 26 with the sleeves of his shirt making a noose around his neck and hanging from the door of the lock up.

State Home minister Gaikhangam had yesterday announced in the House that additional SP, Wangoi police L Sanajaoba has been appointed to probe in the custodial death.

Even as most of the police personnel of the Wangoi Police Station were involved in trying to control the protestors who were trying to impose the bandh at spots of the busy Mayai Lambi, several bandh supporters attacked the Wangoi Police Station around 10.30am with petrol bombs.

Soon after, the police personnel present inside the station put off the fire and fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the attackers.

However, none were injured in the confrontation.

The protestor turned back to the Wangoi bazaar and burned down effigies of officer in charge Wangoi Police Munal and demanded his termination at the earliest.

The protestors had earlier staged a sit in protest at the bazaar area.

Meanwhile, the band affected normal life in the area as passenger vehicles plying along the route remained off the road and shops and other business establishments remained closed for the day.

Road blocks were placed at different places along the Mayi Lambi by the bandh supporters.

On the other hand, post mortem was conducted at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences this noon in the presence of a duty magistrate with full video coverage.

The body has been deposited as unclaimed at the RIMS morgue. Officer in charge, Wangoi has also issued a notification announcing that the body will be disposed if the body is not claimed till tomorrow noon.
