IMPHAL, March 8: A felicitation programme of Ratan Thiyam was held on Saturday at the JN Manipur Dance Academy for his achievements in life. It was organised by Ratan Thiyam Taramna Opka Apunba Lup.

E Sonamani, A Shyam Sharma, O Biramangol Singh, E Chaobhal, Thoidingjam Tombi Singh, Thourani Sabi Devi and B Jayantakumar Sharma attended the felicitation as presidium members.

Ratan Thiyam said that people in Manipur are inclined towards Kala and Sankriti. People of Manipur are well known abroad and a big role is taken by Sankriti and Kala in Manipuri traditions. With people’s support then it will bring development in culture.

“Proper guidelines should be given to develop the arts in the state. People communicate less and because of it there are less development in arts and culture. Art is nothing but freedom of expression.”

He said that people are least interested in culture because the craze for money is high.

“Competition is very less as compared to outsiders. Government is also not taking responsibility is not doing anything for the artists. Youths have to be aware of traditions and culture. It is also not developing any policy and programmes for the artists. Various art forms are in a developed state. There exist communication gaps among artists of the state.”

He appealed all the people to join hands and bring development as soon as possible.

Aribam Shyam said that he appreciated the organisation of such felicitation functions in the state.

“People need to have a collective in the state. The concerned department needs to be cautious of improper development of the art-forms in Manipur. Culture has to be studied from Class IX; there will be a reversal of study in the state. People need to join and bring development in the state.”
