KOHIMA, Feb 28 (NEPS): Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Chotisuh Sazo, has formally launched the “Eastern Platform News (EPN),” an Online News Portal here at Hotel Japfu Friday.
Launching the Online News Portal, the Speaker said the Internet’s entry into Nagaland was only a little over a decade ago and within this short span of time; it had changed the landscape of “information sharing in innumerable ways” and “had tremendously impacted on our lives.”
He also informed that the Internet had eliminated “geographical barriers and one can stay connected with other people in different states and countries through social media networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn etc.”
Stating that 66% of people were using Internet on their smart phones, Sazo informed that they could easily access online news portals whenever and wherever they wanted to know that was going on around the world.
He also narrated that the people in Nagaland were still heavily dependent on print media for information and this might continue but at the same time they were already “active on social media and blogging.”
He said the People who had a taste for fast and accurate news would be glued to the online editions and further pointed out that the Eastern Platform News Online Portal would be providing services toward this.
While encouraging the “Eastern Platform News (EPN) Online Portal” to add valued news to the already existing online editions, the Speaker opined that sometimes one-sided reporting took place and explaining that such style of reporting would be doing more harm than good. Similarly many online editions around the world in their haste for making breaking news without ascertaining the facts had also caused much harm.
Congratulating the staffs of the Eastern Platform News for coming up with such Online News Portal, Sazo urged them that the reporting covered in their portals should be crosschecked before being published.
While hoping that the continued updating in the news portal at every given point of time would give latest news to the readers, the Speaker hoped that the Eastern Platform News Portal would continue to provide “in-depth, unbiased information” to the readers whereby they could make “informed decision.”
Chief Adviser to the Eastern Platform News, Oken Jeet Sandham, said “We will strictly maintain all the established journalistic ethics in the functioning of the Eastern Platform News and also allow citizens to ventilate their views and opinions as per the standard journalistic norms practiced around the world”.
Speaking at the launch Methna Konyak, Editor-in-Chief of the Eastern Platform News (NPN) stated that “We hope that with the launching of the news portal, we shall be able to highlight the plight of the people living in the remotest areas of the countries, while also equally highlighting the importance of various issues prevailing in other parts of the region”. He also assured to welcome all suggestion for improvement and also to give space for the views and opinions in the online publication.
The function was chaired by Zhokholu Nyekha while Vote of Thanks was delivered by Nongothung Dominic.
