Thoubal troubled over woman`s suspicious death

IMPHAL, March 21: Controversy looms large in Bamon Leirak of Thoubal district following the death of a newly-wed woman who was found hanging by her scarf inside the bathroom on March 18.

The deceased has been identified as Leimarakpam Ningol Moirangthem ongbi Monika, 18 years, wife of Bikramjit of Thoubal Bhamon Leirak.    

Meanwhile, the husband of the deceased reportedly surrendered at the Kakching Police Station around 3.30 pm on 18 March.

Police sources informed that the incident took place around 9.30 in the morning. She was reportedly found hanging inside the bathroom by her in laws using her scarf.

Although she was rushed to JNIMS, doctors declared her brought dead.

Suspecting foul play for delay in conveying the news to the maternal home of the deceased, an irate mob from Thoubal Khunou Mayai Leikai (maternal side) stormed the in laws residence of the deceased and attempted to set on fire the house.

In an attempt to disperse the mob the a team of Thoubal police commandos resorted to firing live rounds in the air and tears gas shells.

While an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident, police also rounded up the in laws of the deceased including her husband for further interrogation.

Meanwhile registering strong protest against the incident, locals of Thoubal Khunou disrupted the traffic along the NH 2 of the stretch. The deceased parents accused that their daughter was murdered before being hanged.

A public meeting was also convened on March 19 at Bamon Leikai community hall organised by the Jupiter club Thoubal Bamon Leikai.

The meeting presided by S Sanajaobi Devi councillor ward number 8, adopted a resolution containing charter of demands.

Extending its condolence the meet demanded to award befitting punishment to the culprits, at the same time to serve quit notice.

It also demanded full proof security to family members of the deceased until justice is done and to constitute a monitoring committee.

Meanwhile, the JAC formed in connection with the death of the women called a press conference at the Manipur Press Club on Friday.

Speaking at the press conference, the father deceased said his 18-year-old daughter had married Moirangthem Bikramjit Singh on December 9 last year.

He alleged that she was admitted to the district hospital in Thoubal on March 18 around 11: 30 am by her in-laws after she was murdered which came to light only after being informed by locals of her husband.

Manithoi continued that after receiving the information they rushed to the district hospital but none from his son-in-law’s family were present and till date his deceased daughter’s family members remained uncommunicative.

Hospital authorities claimed that her dead body was left to the hospital by saying that she committed suicide by hanging herself, adding that if she committed suicide than her in-laws or her husband must be present after all she was not a stranger to them, so it appeared as a case of a murder.

The deceased father said that they found bruised marks on her body and the hospital authorities also informed she was brought without any cloths on her body, and added that an FIR was filed at the Thoubal Police Station on March 18. Later, the dead body of the deceased was taken to JNIMS, Porompat.
