UKHRUL, March 23: In this age of the internet where everything one needs to know is only a click away, the very existence of Doordarshan television might have been consigned to oblivion. But the Ukhrul DDK Transmission Centre located in the heart of Ukhrul town at Phungreitang takes it in its stride and continues to perform its bounden duty of relaying programs broadcast by the DDK Imphal.

According to senior engineering assistance Vareingam Vashum, ever since the station was upgraded with 500 wt transmitters in 2006, it has been faithfully attending to its duty so that program transmission reach the public of the district, particularly those in the interiors where there is less development.

Established in 1985 with a mere 100 wt transmitter, the centre has come a long way in reaching out to the public of Ukhrul in spite of various difficulties.

He further said that in 2008 the centre distributed 300 sets of DTH along with TV sets to different villages and far off places through the district administration.

“Among the machines and equipments installed at the centre are two 500 wt transmitters, two UPS of 6 KV and 1 KV,” Vareingam said.

Meanwhile, the centre is looking forward to a new FM channel to come up in near future. “It is learnt that 50 per cent of the process has been completed”, he added.
