Vehicular checks raise doubts

IMPHAL, March 22: Police personnel and traffic police carried out a drive in which people driving without valid driving licences, RC books and riding two-wheelers without helmets were fined to prevent the increasing number of road accidents.

A team led by three MPS officers including a lady officer who are in probation along with some armed police personnel and traffic police personnel checked two wheelers coming from BT flyover from Uripok side and coming from Kwaramband Keithel towards Kangla in front of the Gambhir Singh Shopping Arcade.

During this drive, our IFP correspondent observed that the documents of not a single four wheeler vehicle were checked by the police team and only the documents of two wheelers were checked suggesting a lack of proper checking of vehicles plying along the road.

Many riding two wheelers were fined for not possessing RC books, driving licences and driving without helmets. But the police hardly fined pillion riders who were riding without helmets.

Many riding mopeds coming in high speeds didn’t bother to stop when they were asked to stop by the police team and sped away by mocking and shouting at them but police personnel remained as mute spectators.

“The state police along with the traffic police are best equipped for the task to control the various cases of vehicle robbery and accident cases but it is unfortunate that such drive resumed again only some days ago and it will fade away in a or two due to which people will be fed up with such checking,” lamented a two wheeler driver.

People have witnessed such type of checking for past some years which last for some days and eventually fade away and is again enforced with similar kind of checking after a gap of many months during the time of festivals creating confusion to the public.

“The directive to wear the helmets by two wheeler riders came out some years back but till date approximately only 2 percent of two wheeler riders are seen wearing them in Imphal,” shared an office goer who frequents the BT road.

On the other hand there is no sign of proper control of vehicles parked in the various ‘No Parking’ areas of Imphal city as many vehicles are still parked on those areas; vehicles coming from opposite direction in a one way route are not stopped by the police in both the main busy market places of Paona and Thangal Bazaar, said a shop keeper in Thangal bazar.

Police also failed to control double parking of four wheeler vehicles in Paona Bazaar and Thangal Bazaar which created problem for passersby and others going along these two roads.

If the police continues to work diligently round the year than the people of the state might as well start wearing helmets and drive vehicles with proper documents.
