IMPHAL, March 29: A young woman allegedly committed suicide after having consumed at Moirang Sribol Leikai, under Moirang Police station, Bishnupur district yesterday.
The victim is identified as Naorem (N) Konjengbam (O) Asha alias Bembem, 18, wife of Tomba.
The incident has sparked controversy with the maternal family alleging foul play.
Sources said that the victim was found unconscious in the middle of paddy fields few kilometres away from her home in the afternoon with a bottle of pesticide and a glass tumbler lying near the body.
She was rushed to CHC Moirang around 11.30 pm at night but doctors declared her brought dead.
Although she hailed from Serou Mayai Leikai She grew up at maternal grand-parents’ home at Awang Potshangbam Khullen as her mother died since she was a child.
Meanwhile, unconvinced with the suicide theory the maternal family of the conducted a press meet this afternoon at the Manipur Press club wherein they suspected the death as murder.
During the meet Asha’s grandfather Laishram Manglem said that Asha got married to Kongjengbam Yaima alias Tomba s/o Mani of Moirang Sribol Leikai on December 8, 2013.
However her husband just few months after the marriage brought another pregnant woman.
Sustaining his theory of murder, Manglem said that preparation was all set for cremating Asha when they reach Moirang Sribol Leikai.
He further questioned why Asha taken to health centre late at night when she was found unconscious in the afternoon.
Moreover, he revealed that cuts wound were also seen on her body.
Asha’s grand further demanded befitting punishment for all the culprits while urging for a probe into the case.
While the corpse has been deposited at the RIMS morgue, police has registered a complaint at the Moirang police station.
