AR personnel injured in ambush

IMPHAL April 8: A personnel of the 44 Assam Rifle was injured when suspected valley based UG cadre ambushed a Road Opening Party of the said 44 Assam Rifles this morning around 9:30 at Kamjong in Ukhrul district.

According to a reliable source, the ambush was carried out Tuesday around 9:30 am.

Suspected underground militants laying in wait at the area laid the ambush upon the security team who were on thier way to be deployed at a polling station.

An AR personnel received bullet injuries on his left thigh and right testicle. He was immediately airlifted to Leimakhong Military Hospital for treatment, sources informed.

The injured personnel has been identified as rifleman Indralal Singh, 34, bearing army number 5012050 from Chhattisgarh and his condition is reportedly stated to be out of danger, the sources said.

Sources said the team was fired upon from the hill sides, at which the ROP team retaliated .

However, the militants managed to flee from the spot.

Our Ukhrul correspondent R Lester Makang adds: Following the attack the AR team retaliated and the two sides exchanged gun fires for about half an hour.

It was only after the AR troops reinforced their strength that the rebels fled from the scene.

It may be mentioned that today`s encounter came barely 24 hours after a similar gun fight had occurred between the 44 AR convoy and cadres of MNRF at the same village in Kamjong on Monday noon.

However, no casualties were reported from yesterday`sgun fight.

Meanwhile, reports have said that following Monday`s encounter, security has already been beefed up in and around the area. Troops of the 44 Assam Rifles have been carrying out patrol duties in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha which is scheduled on April 9, 2014.
