Family of assaulted `Medicine man` decries Sekmai Police indifference

IMPHAL, April 19: Family members of N Indrajit, who was trashed by locals for allegedly practising witchcrafts, decried the indifferent attitude of the Sekmai police to take up necessary action against perpetrators despite having lodged an FIR in connection with the case.

Claiming that N Indrajit, 72, from Awang Leikenthabi Mamang Leikei, to be a local medicine man, his family denied the charges levelled against him and lodged an FIR against the perpetrators who were involved in the assualt.

A press conference was held in this connection at the Manipur Press Club wherein Danapati the victim’s daughter recalled that the first incident taken place on February 16 at around 2:30 pm.

Around 50 people led by self proclaimed shaman (Maichou), Khumukcham Balin Singh (20) with two of his accomplish came to her house and thrashed her father for wrong reasons.

The perpetrators not only trashed her father but used abusive words against her when she protested, said Danapati.

Further the victim’s wife, Naorem ongbi Memcha Devi, disclosed that despite an attempt to bring an amicable solution things get out of hand.

On February 19 at 11:00am, a mob numbering around 200 people surrounded their residence.

She further revealed that her family tried to escape the aggressive mob however failed to do so. The mob separated her husband from the rest of the family and trashed him at a nearby paddy field further claimed Memcha.

Memcha further alleged that the police who arrived during the time did not intervene and failed to prevent the mob trashing.

On February 20 her house was destroyed using excavator destroying properties worth about Rs 50-60 lakh, Memcha added.

The family appealed to the authority concerned to intervene in the incident and to deliver justice to the family.
