HDF, Manipur laments `poor arrangement` of accessibility for disabled

IMPHAL, April 17: The Handicapped Development Foundation Manipur said in a press release that the foundation has conducted a field survey, monitoring about the accessibility of electors with disabilities in the inner Manipur Lok – Sabha Election on 17th April 2014. The team has covered the polling stations of Loukrakpam Leikai, Patsoi Kendra polling station located at KRISPA Lampak , polling station nos. 19/17 and 19/13, Khurai Sajou leikai and Thongam leikai Polling station nos. 3/19,3/20 and 3/21, Kameng, Lamlei polling stationed at Kameng High School (South Wing), polling station nos. 8/29 and 8/28 and Polling Station no. 8/1, located at Swongbung Primary School. The teams were disappointed at the poor arrangement made for the accessibility of the disabled in voting for the visually impaired, hearing impaired and other handicapped voters which the government and the State Election Commission, Manipur was supposed to have provided under petition vide order dated 05/10/2007 of Supreme Court of India, said the press release. It continued that one of the wheel chair bound person, Pheirojam Kripa, Nongada, Lamlei expressed his discontentment over the relevant authority`s disregard about the accessibility of disabled in the polling stations and also said that through media he came to know that the ECI would facilitate and arrangement made for the people with disabilities but on the ground there is no such thing available.
