Kombirei garden cultivating indigenous flowers

IMPHAL, April 12: With the main objective of preserving and generating “Kombirei,” the endangered indigenous flower of the state has been cultivated at the Kombirei Garden, Yaralpat.

Founder of the garden, Sanaton Ninghthouja from Moirangkampu Makha Leikai who is also a known lyricist and playwright of the state said that he has developed the garden with the hope of attracting visitors.

Sanaton Ninghthouja further said that the garden was inaugurated on April 7, 2008 with only a single plant of Kombirei which he had taken from a local of Yaralpat and that single plant has multiplied.

The garden was established without any funding from the government save for some assistance from the horticulture department in setting up of Green House while, the Tourism department has set-up a cafeteria and toilet in the campus, he said.

He said the Kombirei flower blooms with the advent of March.

The garden not only preserves the flower, but also provides a place to the public to hang out.

He said the presence of an imitation of a train has also attracted the children. There is also a plan to include a toy train in the garden, he continued. Even though nursery plants of Kombirei are on sale at the garden, it is not much profitable.
