Re-poll in 6 polling stations

Overall 84.56% voter turnout, CEO reports

IMPHAL, April 11: The Election Commission of India has recommended re-polling in six polling stations  in Chandel, Ukhrul and Senapati on April 12 after a report was submitted recommending re-polling for mass impersonation during the April 9 Outer constituency polls.

This was stated by CEO Manipur, Oinam Nabakishore in a press conference in his office at the New Secretariat on Friday afternoon.

“There was a record breaking turn out in the election as per the records. The total poll percentage was 84.6 percent in the outer constituency. After the outer constituency polls on April 9, many complaints about untoward incidents appeared in newspapers and about misunderstanding that occurred during the polls.”

He said that the CEO, the concerned RO, AROs and two observers took the statements of Presiding Officers of polling stations and assistant polling personnel etc on Thursday and after deliberating on this matter the CEO has sent the report to ECI.

Oinam Nabakishore said that the re-poll will be held on April 12 from 7am to 4pm. Polling station number 41/21 at Lambung in Chandel district is to be repolled as the EVM in the polling station was destroyed by a voter on the polling day on April 9. Repolling at the polling station number  42/26 (Molnoi village), also in Chandel district is necessited as the number of voters polled was 961 when the total number of voters is 960 in the said polling station. Repolling also will be done at polling station number 44/2  (Sanakeithel) in Ukhrul district as there was a threat by certain elements to the polling officers and voters on the polling day (April 9). Repolling will be held for polling station number 46/45 at Keihao Tangkhul village, Saikul in Senapati district there was 429 voters polled when the total number of voters is 426. For polling station number 47/5 at Katao village (Karong assembly constituency) in Senapati district the ECI has recommended for repolling as the the polled percentage was 102.5. Simi
lar case was for the polling station number 47/19 (Thaibung Khunou) in Senapati distict with the polled percentage was 103.97.

He said the three polling stations in Senapati where repoll will be conducted, voters whose name had been deleted from the voters’ list had also come to vote.

He said that for the re-poll on Saturday, the CEO has already issued notice to concerned DCs of hill distrcts which they must notify in every polling station for the re-poll. The six polling stations have been deployed already with 80 armed personnel. He said that as per the records the poll percentage in Jiribam, Thoubal, Chandel, Ukhrul,Senapati,Tamenglong, Churachandpur were 61.16%, 78.87%, 91.91%, 88.57%, 89.83%, 84.87% and 80.90% respectively.

The overall voter turnout was 770957 of which 393513 were females and 378893 were males.  But the actual figure of people who pressed the NOTA button can’t be ascertained, he said.
