Security measures tightened ahead of polls

IMPHAL, April 3: With the dates for the Lok Sabha polls fast approaching, security measures in the state has seen quite a step up in recent times. Search and cordon operations have been conducted in almost every locality in the valley districts in the run up to the polls.

On Thursday afternoon, the Imphal East district police detained eight individuals who were unable to produce any proper verification during one such search and cordon operation at Lamlong Bazar and its surrounding area.

The eight were handed over to the Porompat Police for further verification.

The operation was conducted this afternoon under the supervision of additional SP (Ops) Imphal East Singhajit led by OC Achouba.

Meanwhile, the district police have also arrested two OGWs of the KRA (U) during a different search and cordon operation and a vehicle lifter during a routine search operation today.

Two overground workers of the KRA (U) were arrested along with five demand letters and two mobile phones by the I/E district police commandos during a similar operation conducted early this morning at Kshetrigao area.

Sources identified the two arrested OGWs as Md Amir Khan alias Amir, 37, son of Md Basei Helim and Md Saroj Khan alias Kslam, 30, son of (L) Md Abdul Halim of Kshetrigao Awang Leikai.

The commando team also recovered five demand notes and two mobile handsets from the two.

In another instance, a team of the district police commandos arrested a vehicle lifter identified as Konsam Romen, 34 son of Brojendro of Khurai Konsam Leikai this morning.

The team also recovered a toy gun used in his work, a mobile phone handset and a stolen Honda Activa.
