Twin strikes affect life in state capital

IMPHAL, April 29: President  Pranab Mukherjee was greeted by empty streets on his visit to the state today.

The twin 12-hour general strikes imposed by the procribed CorCom and the Maoist communist Party, Manipur to boycott the President’s visit, however concluded peacefully.

The general strikes which started from 5 am today affected normal life in the state. Business activities were put to a grinding halt including at the commercial hub of the state Imphal.

Main markets including the Khwairamband market, Paona bazaar and Thangal bazaar remained closed during the day.

Public transportation including inter and intra state passenger services remained non-operational due to the bandh.

The strike also affected normal academic atmosphere in the state with most of the schools and colleges remaining closed. Although Government offices were opened, employee attendance was recorded to be very low.

To thwart any unwanted incident during the strike a large number of state police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strategic points especially in Imphal.
