12-hour general strike on May 16

IMPHAL, May 15: The Hannajing Marjingkol Pakhangba Laisana Kanba Lup (Hampak Leikal Lup) has called a 12-hour general strike from 6 am to 6 pm on Friday demanding arrest of four individuals accusing them of damaging the shrine of the Ebudhou Marjing while performing “Lainingthou Cheng Hongba.”

The organisation has also condemned the Heingang Police for remaining silent spectator to the incident.

While briefing media at the Manipur Press Club today, the convenor of the body, Ningthoujam Sorojini expressed that the Lainingthou Nongda Lairen Pakhangba and Ebendhou Laisana located at Hannajing hillock has since long been worshipped by the Meitei community of the area.

However, problems erupted after the hillock on which the shrine stands at was ceded to another community by a former local MLA.

She further alleged that on Wednesday, some persons with vested interest arrived while the Lainingthou Cheng Hongba was is progress, and disrupted the ritual.

She alleged that the Heingang police was all the time present at the spot.

In this regard, Sorojini continued, an application was submitted to the said police station to book four persons involved in the disturbance of the ritual and asserted that unless police book the said culprits, more serious agitations will be launched.
