IMPHAL May 7: The accused in the rape case of a minor girl on April was produced before the district and session court, Manipur East and was further remanded for 15 more days in judicial custody till May 21on Wednesday.
A large number of JAC members and family members of the girl gathered before the court complex. A tight security cover was provided to the under trial in the Sajiwa Central Jail.
The accused, Ngaopuni, remanded in judicial custody till May 21, will be produced again before the court the same day.
Ngaopuni of Paomei Colony, Chingmeirong was arrested by the Police from Senapati district two days after he had allegedly raped the 13-year-old girl at Koirengei hillock on April 17 after taking her, who is young enough to be his granddaughter, to cast a proxy vote for his daughter who is studying outside the state.
A JAC was formed after the incident and various kinds of agitation including a total bandh along the National Highway-2, Imphal Dimapur Road, were launched.
During the course of agitation launched by the JAC and angry locals, a youth was killed in police firing on April 18.
