Anti-Terrorism Day observation pledges to encourage peace and harmony

IMPHAL, May 21: The State government today observed the Anti-Terrorism Day at the Banquet Hall of the 1st Manipur Rifles, Imphal by pledging to oppose terrorism and encourage peace and harmony.

The observation was attended by Health and Family Welfare minister Phungzathang Tonsing as the chief guest, Commerce and Industries minister Govindas Konthoujam as president.

The day is observed to commemorate the assassination of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur, said minister Phungzathang Tonsing.

Continuing his speech, he spoke on the good works of the former Prime Minister.

The late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was a farsighted leader and had established the Jawaharlal Navodaya Vidyalayas all over the country to bring improvement in quality of education.

He also highlighted the establishment of MTNL for telecommunication revolution and the signing of the Mizo Accord as some of the achievements of the late Prime Minister.

The time is ripe for the people to stand against terrorism and move towards development, said minister Govindas Konthoujam.

The chief secretary of Manipur, other top bureaucrats and police officers also attended the program.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee also observed the day at the Congress Bhavan with leaders of the party and members paying homage to the late Prime Minister.

Health and Family Welfare minister, Phungzathang Tonsing , Commerce and Industries, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry minister, Konthoujam Govindas, Thanga MLA and also the vice president MPCC, T Mangibabu Singh, other cabinet ministers, others attended today’s function.

Both the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam were absent from the function as both are in the national capital.

The observation also took the anti-terrorism pledge.

The day was also observed at Bishnupur district.
