Calls for forest preservation reverberates on Int’l Biodiversity day

UKHRUL, May 22: As part of the International Biological Diversity Day, UDBRDS/DIMC Eco Club, Ukhrul organised a on the spot eco painting competition on protection of Shirui Lily biodiversity, apart from screening of environment related movies at Ukhrul Talkies, 41 AR, Wino Bazaar Ukhrul today.

Students from various schools in Ukhrul town participated in the competition and assembled while holding colourful posters reading “ Lets Make A Green and Clean Ukhrul “ at the AR campus.

SDO Ukhrul Worshang Hungyo also attended the program.

Addressing at the function, Hungyo said that climate change has already begun to affect the flora and fauna as well as water species including fish whose population is fast decreasing.

He also emphasized on the need to protect nature, while expressing concern over depleting water sources across the district making water business a thriving one these days.

Meanwhile, speaking as resource person, MK Tuisem Shimray asst engineer environment MPCB called upon one and all to participate in efforts for forest preservation.

“We all should learn to plant trees before felling them for fire wood,” he urged.

Citing impact of man-made environmental degradation, Shimray said that a single plant of Shirui Lily used to be very tall and bore several flowers but today it has been reduced to just 2/3 feet with a single bloom on a plant.
