Fund meant for drain construction embezzled

IMPHAL, May 9: A local club of the Thoubal Wangmataba has alleged that fund sanctioned for the construction of a drain near a local school has been embezzled by the councillor of the concerned ward.

Addressing a press meet today at the premises of the Social Service and Welfare Association, a member of the club said a sum of Rs 20 lakh sanctioned for construction of a drain at Thoubal Wangmataba near Sophia English School of Thoubal Wangmataba Sorok Makha Doctorsang Maning Leikai under ward number one of the Thoubal Municipal Council has been embezzled by the councillor.

The irregularity came to light when the people of the locality made an enquiry on the matter.

He said that the Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) had sanctioned a sum of Rs 1.50 crore for undertaking six development works out of which five works were in Thoubal A/C and one work in Singjamei A/C respectively.

The club member further revealed that the commissioner of MAHUD S Sunderlal Singh had sanctioned the amount on October 10, 2010 under sanction order No. 6/7/2012-MAHUD and the works implementation was assigned to PDA.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the construction of drain at Thoubal Wangmataba near Sophia English School is among the five works and its sanctioned amount is Rs 20 lakh and continued that the Councillor of the concerned ward Okram Ongbi Inaotombi Devi has drawn the same amount without executing a single work.

He further disclosed that there was a meeting of the locality on the said agenda on April 29 last and the meeting has demanded a clarification from Okram (o) Inaotombi for drawing Rs 20 lakh without constructing a drain at the proposed side and the resolutions of the meeting were intimated to local MLA, the Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh for his intervention.

However, the exercise of the April 29 has now become futile as there is no response from the local MLA and accordingly it has been decided to launch agitations from May 25 if their demand are not met before the dateline, the club member said.
