IMPHAL, May 14: As a part of the nationwide protest against the recently conducted 16th Lok Sabha elections launched by left parties on Wednesday, the Left and Secular Alliance, Manipur also organised a protest at Irawat Bhawan.

Speaking at the press conference, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate in the inner Manipur seat at the 16th Lok Sabha Election, Dr M Nara said the nationwide campaign commenced on May 13 at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.

Alleging that the 16th LS polls have witnessed lots of cases of voting by proxy and boot capturing in various parts of the country, he said that the aim of the protest is also to highlight the problems which was faced by people during the elections due to the display of muscle power by influential people, adding that due to violations of code of conduct, a free and fair election didn’t occur in the country.

The protest will also make the people aware of the various wrong activities which were performed during the recent 16th LS elections.

Continuing that on meeting the ECI on April 29, he was assured that re-polls in the polling stations which crossed 90 percent will be conducted, he said the same day he has also submitted the evidence of the various unfair means used in 26 constituencies.

However, those assurances remain only in words as no actions have been taken up as yet, he lamented.

He continued that not taking any strict actions against those officials whose actions tantamount to violation of the model code of conduct is highly condemnable.

The statement from ECI about its denial of the demand for re-polls is not a reflection of a true democracy, he said, alleging that the instances of over cent percent voting in some polling station is the handiwork of the ruling party.

He also alleged that the ruling party is trying to weaken democracy in the country by giving more thrust on winning the elections rather than strengthening democracy.
