Police imposters caught while frisking people

IMPHAL, May 4: Irate mob roughed up five imposters who had dressed up as police personnel this evening at Kairang Muslim under Heingang Police station.

The accused are identified as Yumkhaibam Bhabananda, 25, son of (L) Brajamani of Uripok Bachaspati Leikai, Anoubam Thomas, 24, son of Helendra of Uripok Khaidem Leikai, Lasihram Manao, 24, son of (L) Gyaneshor, Longjam Dinesh, 24, son of Amar and Angom Suresh, 25 son of (L) Bijoykumar. All accused hail from Uripok Bachaspati Leikai.

According to sources, the imposters came in a Tata Safari bearing registration number MN01-S- 5253 and reportedly conducted frisking and checking operation at various places in and around Kairang Muslim area from around 5.30 evening.

One of the culprits identified as Y Bhabananda, was clad in police uniform with two stars on his shoulder patch, while the remaining were in civvies. It has been learnt that the name plate on Bhadananda’s uniformed was labelled Thomas who later turned out to be a VDF personnel posted at Lamphel Police station.

During their course of staged duty (checking and frisking) the imposters happened to come across a police personnel, a resident of Kairang Muslim village identified as Md Yusuf near Karang Muslim Mayai leikai near Progressive Youth Association ground.

Yusuf who was doubtful of their conduct, demanded the five to produce their ID cards, following which the culprits attempted to flee from the scene.

However, the locals present at the area managed to nab the culprits and thrashed them black and blue. At the same time, the Tata Safari was also damaged by the locals.

The culprits were later rescued from the clutches of the angry mob and a case has been registered with regards to the incident.

Police also reportedly recovered a toy gun and an Air pistol from their possession.
