Police search at URF camp yields nothing

IMPHAL May 6: A Imphal-West District Police team carried out a massive search operation in cahoots with a state forensic experts team on Tuesday in the designated camps of United Revolutionary Front (URF) in Spinning Mill, 9 Dogra Command Operating Base at Loitang Khonou Spinning Mill from 8 am till 2 pm in relation with the missing of two Captains and Second Lieutenant of the front.

According to our sources, the search operation was conducted by an Imphal-West District Police team led by SDPO Lamshang from 8 am after the family members of the two URF officials lodged a complaint at the Lamshang Police a few days back.

The police team accompanied by forensic experts’ team dug various places of the newly plastered ground floor of the designated compound and a kitchen garden searching for the presence of any dead bodies as per the complaint lodges by the family members.

The duo indentified as Irengbam Washington alias Milankumar, 32, son of late Kumar of Tairenpokpi, holding the rank of a Captain in URF and Pukhrambam Somorjit alias Washington, 32, son of P Lakshman of Waheng Khuman, second in command of URF were allegedly killed and buried inside the compound of the designated camp for URF cadres.

During the search operation, the police and forensic expert team didn’t recover anything.

The family members of the URF cadres and a large number of locals had stormed the camp after they suspected that the two who remained untraceable from 19 March from their designated camps were killed and buried inside the camp on 1st and 2nd May. They also lodged a complaint at the Sekmai Police station.

Home secretary of URF, Puyum Ruhini had clarified to the media in a press conference at the designated camp on 2 may that the duo went missing from the intervening night of March 18 and 19 and the matter came to light only after the duo failed to turn up for their routine fall-in parade on the morning of March 19, adding that after the duo failed to return back in their designated camp they have lodged a complaint at the Sekmai Police Station.

In the press conference, Ruhini also stated that after the duo have failed to turn up they contacted their family members to enquire about their whereabouts, stating that the duo won’t not be declared as deserters until a general congress of the outfit was convened.
