Spastic Society of Manipur to collaborate with National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities

IMPHAL, May 19: The Spastic Society of Manipur is going to collaborate with the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) and provide extension service to persons with multiple disabilities in the state.

NIEPMD called a press conference today at Manipur Press Club in this regard.

HOD of NIEPMD, Nachiketa said that the Chennai based institute is an apex organisation under the Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and was established in the year 2005.

The aim of the institute is to serve as a National Resource Centre for the Empowerment of persons with multiple disabilities; he said adding that the core group of persons with multiple disabilities are persons with cerebral palsy, persons with autism, persons who are deaf blind along with other people with combination of one or more disabilities.

He further said that the NIEPMD caters to the need through providing state of the art clinical service and by developing manpower through human resource development.

The Spastic Society of Manipur (SSM) is a dedicated centres working for persons with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities since 2001, he continued.

He informed that the institute is in a process of signing an MoU and develop an Extension Centre of NIEPMD at SSM.

Laishram Tokendra Ricky said that the Extension Centre will be at SSM located at Ghari, but the permanent centre will be at Tabokpi, Langthaba Kunja which is to be built under SCA fund.

The centre is an initiative of Chief Minister of the state and the building will be fully accessible and barrier free.

The clinical service of SSM would be strengthening followed with initiation of courses to train man power at Manipur.
