State Govt to produce Sharmila before Delhi Court on May 28

IMPHAL, May 7: A sum of Rs 1.38 lakhs will be spent by the Government of Manipur for producing Sharmila before the Delhi Court. It is mentionable that Irom Chanu Sharmila has been fasting since November 6, 2000 demanding to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.

Reliable official sources revealed that the government of Manipur has prepared necessary arrangement for appearing Sharmila before the Court of Delhi on May 28, 2014 at 11 am. The source further mentioned that she will physically appear in the court number 6 of the metropolitan magistrate which located in the main building of the Patiala House Court Complex, New Delhi.

Sharmila along with necessary staff will leave Imphal in a Delhi-Imphal bound flight for New Delhi on May 27.

In this connection, the Jail Authority has forwarded a proposal to Home Department for necessary sanction of sum Rs 138700 and the proposal is now in the Finance Department, the sources said and added that the Delhi team of Sharmila will be accompanied by one doctor, two nurses and two each personnel from Jail Authority and police department.

Irom Chanu Sharmila has been summoned to physically appear in the court for her agitation of sit in protest against AFSPA in 2006 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi following which the Parliament Street Police arrested her and the police station registered an FIR No. 222/06 under IPC section 309.

Regarding the case, the metropolitan magistrate had earlier instructed the government of Manipur to produce Sharmila before the court in the last of week of March of this year, however, the concerned authority failed to produce her before the court owing to non release of necessary fund. But this time, the same court has instructed to produce her before court without fail following which preparation is on progress. Despite all effort, Sharmila’s physical appearance before the court could not be materialised if Manipur government does not sanction necessary amount, the sources said.

It is notable that the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal East has released Sharma on March 13 of this year and then she resumed her fast unto death agitation on the same day following which she has been under judicial custody since then.
