“Crime against women on the rise”

IMPHAL, May 31: A public meeting on crime against women and children in Manipur was held today at Yurembam Makha leikai community hall, Imphal West District.

The meeting was organised by the North East Dialogue Forum in collaboration with Women Aaction for Development, meira paibi associations and youth clubs of Yurembam, Imphal West district.

L Pisak, chairperson Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur and secretary New Life Foundation, Ngasepam Memcha; vice president Yusembam Apunba Lup; advocate Ravikhan, Manipur High Court and secretary MALSO; Irengbam Arun, senior journalist; Sobita Mangsatabam, secretary Women Action for Development; Sanghamitra, OC Patsoi PS, L Ibochou, president YACHAL and Kongengbam Gunileima, All Manipur state president Iramdam Lamjing Meira Lup attended the meting as resource persons.

During the meeting L Pisak said that though the domestic violence Act has come into force with the effect from October 26, 2006, the rate of the violence against women within the domestic arena as well as in the social arena seems to be increasing day by day.

It may be because of women’s ignorance of the provisions of the Act or dearth of effective implementation of the Act by the implementing agency, he asserted.

He further said that the rate of crime or violence against women in Manipur is very much high in comparison with other states of the country and in the context of Manipur.

He continued that rape, murder, molestation etc are the common news item that the people in this conflict torn state have been facing almost everyday in life.

And he said that this meeting was held mainly to give awareness about the Act implemented for women and to live with high dignity being women.

Speaking at the meeting Irengbam Arun said that mob culture which is happening in the state should be avoided.

He further site an example that to give a punishment to the culprit is agreeable but to burn down the house or attack the whole family won’t bring any solution or bring justification to the matter.

He continued that instead people should ponder on how to bring solution.
