JIRIBAM, June 5: The ashes of the late Nongthombom Kunjamohon, a renowned writer of the state was submerged in the Barak river as a mark of respect and acknowledgement for his contribution to society, cutting across communities and creeds, as per his wish at around 9.30 am on Thursday by Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Assam, Cachar District Committee and Barak Upeitoka Bango Sahitya and Sankrita Sanmelan, Silchar.
As a part of the submersion of his ashes ceremony, people offered their last tributes to urn containing his ashes at the office of Upeitoka Bango Sahitya and Sankriti Sanmelan, Silchar. Later, Dr Maimon Shantikumar Singh on behalf of Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Assam, Cachar District Committee delivered the key note address on why people are paying their tribute to the late writer.
Reiterating the late writer’s wish of submerging his ashes to his beloved Barak River, Shantikumar said that people from various communities in Cachar, Assam were thronging to pay their last respect to the late writer because he transcended the barriers of caste and creed, and had worked in the field of literature.
Dipak Sen Gupta, Teimur Raja Choudhary of Upeitoka Bango Sahitya and Sankriti Sanmelan, Silchar, and other famous personalities gave speeches at the function which was also attended by the late writer’s younger brother N Bala, N Nande Singh.
