IMPHAL, June 21: Anyone detected with malaria, should be provided prompt and effective treatment including proper vaccination within 24 hours, otherwise the risk gets higher, said State entomologist, Y Krishna Singh.

He was speaking at a One day advocacy meeting of media personnel on precvention and control of vector borne diseases at the hall of the MVHA, Wangkhei Ningthempukhri Mapal today.

The meeting was organised by the Manipur State Vector Borne Disease Control Society and Manipur Voluntary Health Association.

He identified Churachandpur, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Chandel, Jiribam and Kangpokpi as the most malaria prone places in the State.

He said medicines for treatment should be made readily available at these places.

Some of the most communicable vector borne diseases are Malaria, Dengue, Lymphatic Filariasis, Kala-azar, Japanese Encephalitis and Chikungunya, he said before adding that the State is most prone to Malaria, Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis.

Every year, more than 1200 die in India due to malaria, he said.

The North East region contributes 30 percent of India’s total malarial deaths in a year, he elaborated.

The State entomologist said in the year 2012, there were 255 cases of infection which was reduced to 120 cases in 2013 whereas there have been only 21 cases till May 31 this year without any death.

The Manipur State Vector Borne Disease Control Society alone cannot control and eradicate malaria, and needs co-operation from the public and other government agencies, he continued.

State biologist, T Kamini Singh elaborated that vectors are organisms that transmit pathogens and parasites from one infected person or animal to another, causing serious diseases in human populations and such diseases are most common where safe drinking water and sanitation system are unfit.

He said the use of mosquito repellent is one of the effective measures to control malariawhile as for detection & elimination of mosquito breeding sources the best means are proper management of roof tops, sunshades, proper covering of stored water, should not make water stable, and added that if water remains stagnant should pour kerosene or diesel which is the best remedy from mosquito breeding.
