Panel discussion on electoral reform held

IMPHAL, July 13: A panel discussion on ‘Need for a better electoral system in India’ was organised by the Senior Citizen’ for Society (SCS) Manipur during its 9th annual general body meeting today at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

Attending as panelists are national secretary, Indian Association of Lawyers Akshwini Bakshi from Chandigarh and professor Dharampeth Science College, Nagpur Dr Yugal Yayalu from Maharashtra.

Dr Yugal Yayalu, suggested the government to introduce a new mechanism in the form of financial assistance creating a platform for a common man to be able to compete in the election. The funding would help the candidate in printing election materials like printing of banners, posters and also sending officials letters etc, he observed.

Underscoring the proposal, he expressed his optimism that it would bring a better electoral system in the state serving the true purpose of democracy.

Akshwini Bakshi said that the present electoral system has no space for weaker section in the society adding that the present electoral system required huge financial resource to be a candidate in the electoral system.

The campaign for Need for a Better Electoral System in India was kicked off yesterday organising meetings at different places in Manipur under the leadership of national coordinator of Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (SERI) Dr Moirangthem Nara.
