Street vendor injured in face-off with licensed vendors

IMPHAL, July 2: A 70-year-old roadside woman vendor sustained head injuries during a fracas between a group of roadside street vendors and license holding vendors this morning at the Purana Market shed Ngari yonbi pareng.

She was taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

Speaking to the media at the hospital, Khwairamband Keithel Roadside Street Vendors Association secretary Bina said at around 11 am, some 20 license holding vendors of the Purana Keithel came and tried to force the roadside vendors away resulting in a fracas.

During the altercation, a woman pushed Moirangthem Yaimbi, 70 wife of Baodhon of Moidangpok Mamang Leikai who fell down unconscious, she alleged.

She said since, June 29, 2014 the licnce holding vendors had been driving out the roadside vendors and not allowing them to vend their wares near the Purana Market.

However, she blamed the Imphal Municipal Council’s negligence for the incident alleging that the IMC gives out licences only for those who can pay up.

Even though the IMC had announced provision of a temporary market shed for them, it is yet to be translated into works, she said.

An FIR has been lodged regarding the incident with the City Police, she concluded.
