Water scarcity hits Saikul farmers hard

Imphal July 18: More than 70 percent of cultivable lands in Saikul area under Senapati District are facing water scarcity. We are facing a drought like situation here at Saikhul said Thangkam Lupheng, president Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai (KISG) while talking to IFP. He said the farmers are hard hit by the scarcity of water. With scanty rainfall during the last 2-3 months, the farmers are not able to start their cultivation work.

Thangkham continued that cultivable period is going to end soon. It is unfortunate that the Government is not concern about the problem faced by the farmers, he said. Most of the farmers depend on rice cultivation for their livelihood; we don’t know how the Government is going to tackle the situation, adding that if the Government does not act soon the farmers are going to face a hard time.

Thangkham further appealed to the State Government to take immediate action on the drought like situation prevailing in the Saikul area and also in the larger interest of the people. If not thousands of farmers and their family will go hungry, he added.
