All political parties committee seeks expert opinion on ILP

IMPHAL, August 9: The safety of the indigenous population of the State will be ensured, deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also heading the all-political parties committee set up to determine an act to control the influx of foreigners in the State said today.

He told media persons at his office that the committee will ensure that an Act is in place to protect the indigenous population if implementing the Inner Line Permit System becomes impossible.

The first meeting of the committee was held today at the office chamber of the deputy Chief Minister at Old Secretariat today.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, Gaikhangam divulged that the next meeting has been scheduled at the Assembly Secretariat for which the Speaker has also allocated a room.

He said today’s meeting resolved to seek legal opinion in written form from two legal experts each from the High Court Bar Association and All Manipur Bar Association.

Opinions from concerned academicians of the Manipur University and the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System have also been sought, Gaikhangam said.

The experts have also been informed to make their written statements reach the committee within two weeks-time and to be physically present before the committee, he added.

If the need arise, opinions of legal experts from the Supreme Court will also be invited, he further said. 

The 13 member committee of political parties was constituted during a marathon meeting of the political parties held on August 6.

The committee is led by deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as chairman and MLA RK Anand as convener.
