Anti-dengue month kicks off

IMPHAL, August 30: The Manipur State Vector Borne Disease Control Society today inaugurated the anti-dengue month, 2014 at the Manipur Voluntary Health Association, MVHA Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal.

The inaugural function was attended by regional director ROH and FW, Dr LA Singh, State Malaria Officer, NVBDCP, Manipur Dr T Zamkhokam Kuki and president MVHA Kh Achou as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Giving the key-note address, State biologist, NVBDCP, Manipur T Kamini Singh said dengue in Manipur has been detected only in Churachandpur and Moreh till date.

He said in India, dengue was first detected in Kolkata in the year 1963-64.

The first known dengue was detected on October 6, 2007 at RIMS in a patient from Moreh, he said and added that there has been no report of any dengue related death in the State so far.

Kimini Singh continued that the Moreh public were sensitised on dengue and there has been no other cases reported till date.

In 2010 seven cases were detected in Churachandpur he said before adding that it is suspected all seven had contracted the disease from Delhi during a tour.

Dr LA Singh stated that according to World Health Organisation statistics 50 million people in the world are infected with dengue every year out of which 12000 dies of it.

He said among the South East Asian countries, neighbouring country Myanmar falls into the A category with high affection rate, while India falls under the category B where prevalence rate is not so high.
