Vaipheis get first trilingual dictionary

Imphal Aug 9: The first trilingual dictionary of the Vaiphei community was released on Saturday by Autonomous District Council (Chandel) member J N Baite at Vaiphei Christian Church (VCC) Hall at New Lambulane, Imphal.

The dictionary which is from Vaiphei to Vaiphei, Vaiphei to Manipuri and Vaiphei to English is compiled and edited by rev P Kamlam Vaiphei, a retd MCS officer. It was dedicated to God by Rev Laltingen.

Speaking at the dedication-cum-releasing ceremony of the dictionary, Rev P Kamlam Vaiphei said that he never thought about compiling a dictionary but took the mission of compiling the dictionary after attending a seminar on the importance of the indigenous language organised by the Kala Academy some years ago.

Though Vaiphei is a small tribe, many of us do not even know the alphabets of Vaipheis properly, he said. 

JN Baite who graced the function as the chief guest said that it was a day which would be remembered in the annals of the history of the Vaiphei community while also lauding the compiler for his great contribution to the community.

Vaiphei Literature Society vice-Chairman Liankhothang who attended the function as the president said that the Vaipheis are still in the process of developing a language proper and this dictionary will come in handy for the community.

The dedication cum release of the dictionary was also attended by the officials of Vaiphei People Council (VPC), Zillai (Vaiphei Students’ Association) and government officials s apart from a good number of people from the Vaiphei community.
