CADA holds meet on intoxicants

IMPHAL, December 27: The Coalition against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has said that an Academic Awareness Programme on `Mayai kaba nisana maheiroi khunaida piba chietheng`™ was jointly held at Lamlong Higher Secondary School, Khurai Lamlong Bazar with All Manipur Students`™ Union (AMSU) Imphal East District Committee who has also organised a3 months Residential Coaching Camp for class X and XII.

According to a release of CADA, the programme was attended by President of CADA, Advocate Yumnam Ratan as president and State Partner, Tobacco Control Programme Union, New Delhi, S. Nimaichand as resource person.

In his speech, resource person, S. Nimaichand has said that the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) must take up Tobacco Control programme and Tobacco Control Education by concerned ZEO. He demanded that the government must take up action against those who open tobacco stalls near schools and education institutes.

President of the programme, Advocate Yumnam Ratan has also said that despite strict restriction on prohibition of intoxicant since 1980 and Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 by the then Chief Minister, RK Ranbir, alcohol and other intoxicants are still sold freely in the state.

He stated that steps taken up to prohibit intoxicants at various places in the state are for the good of the people. Concerned departments must also take up measures accordingly, he added. He also encouraged the students to take part in the coaching camp organised by the AMSU Imphal East District Committee to gain knowledge so that the students will excel in their examinations and become better persons to help in the development of the society, it said.
