IMPHAL, Dec 29: The All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development Samaj, Nupi Samaj has observed its 34th Suba Meira Paibee Houdokhiba Numit at Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound today.
Delivering the keynote address, general secretary of Nupi Samaj, Th Ramani recalled that the meira paibi movement was formed on December 29, 1980.
It was particularly formed to protect women and children against the attrocities of the Indian security forces under the draconian AFSPA 1958.
She continued that the central government is, on the other hand, proud of its so called democratic achievement by implementing black laws and killing innocent people.
She further stressed on the need to strengthen the movement against AFSPA and said `We should follow in the footsteps of the women fighters of Nupi Lal to save the future generation.`
Prof W Nabakumar of Manipur University maintained that crime against women have increased manifold in the State with the coming of the 21st century.
He emphasised that contribution of Manipuri women in building the society in the past cannot be overlooked by the present generation.
He pointed out that in due course of time traditional value system which were maintained with deference have also undergone rapid change.
There has been a reverse in the value system, but one must note that some of the old values are still relevant today, he said.
He continued that not only women but man also has equal responsibility in building a strong society. But on the contrary, gender crimes have been meted out to women instead of giving them respect for their valuable contribution, he lamented.
Further he said that women have always been at the forefront to protect their man.
As a part of the function one minute silence was observed to respect to those pioneer Meira Paibees who have dedicated for the cause of a just society. Earlier, a song written by late Ema Chaobi was presented as an opening song of the function led by Th Ramani.
