Substitute teacher held for sexually assaulting students

IMPHAL, December 11: Even as the widespread observation of the international fortnight protesting violence against Women concluded yesterday in the State, reports of sexual crimes continue unabated in the State.

A 35-years old substitute teacher at a government school has been arrested on December 9 for allegedly committing sexual assaults on several students who were taking tuition classes from him.

Nongthombam Baru Singh, 35, son of N Achouba Singh of Urup Arapti Litan Makhong under Irilbung Police Station has been arrested by the Imphal East Women Police Station following a report from the family of one of his students.

Barun was a teacher at a private school at Nagaland, returned to the State and became a substitute teacher at the Urup High School. At the same time, he also started giving tuitions to students of nursery to class X.

Sources said he had been committing repeated sexual assaults on his students over a period of time.

This came to light only after one of his students was hospitalised and a medical test conducted on December 10.

A class I student who had joined Barun`™s tuition classes on October 18, 2014 was taken to the Imphal Hospital on December 9 after she started complaining of stomach pain and inability to pass urine, however the hospital stating that it was a medico-legal case referred her to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

At the RIMS, the parents of the child was asked to register a police case beforehand following which, a report was registered at the Imphal East Women Police Station, informed sources.

The accused was arrested following the report and medical test was conducted on both the accused and the child on December 10, informed sources.

Meanwhile, a public meeting was held today against the accused teacher and a JAC was formed. During the meeting it was resolved to give five-days-time to the family of accused to leave the locality.

Later angered by the incident, a mob tore down the house of the accused and set it on fire, however, a team of the fire service came and managed to control the fire.

Meanwhile, a team of the Women Action for Development accompanied by a media team also interacted with the family of the girl student. The team also met with other students of the accused teacher accompanied by their guardians.
