UNLF held, extortionist gang busted

IMPHAL, December 27: Troops of the 22 Assam Rifles of 28 Sector AR under along with Thoubal Police Commandos apprehended an active cadre of UNLF on December 26 in a jointly launched operation in the general area of Hiyanglam Laipangamba.

According to a release of the PRO, the apprehendee was identified as SS Cpl, Naorem Gouridas alias Punshishemba Singh, 40, son of (L) Naorem Nandakeshwor Singh of Kakching Chumnang Leikai, Thoubal. The apprehendee has been handed over to the Kakching Police Station, it said.

Another press release of the PRO has stated that on December 26, a mobile frisking and checking in and around Lamlai Bazar was conducted by a team of Imphal East District Police commando unit.

During the operation, a member of a gang which indulge in extorting money from the private schools in the name of URF, was busted and gang members Phijam Chitaranjan Meitei alias Naocha, 22, son of Ph. Tomcha Meitei of Sekta Makha Leikai were arrested and incriminating articles were seized from his possession, it said.

On follow up action, another member of the gang, who is presently functioning as Deputy Secretary of Kangleipak Student Association (KSA), namely, Mayanglambam Anilkumar Meitei alias Tangba, 21, son of M. Angangjao Meitei of Sekta Makha Leikai was arrested from Porompat crossing in front of State Bank of India. Investigation revealed that recently the 2 of them made monetary demand at 2 private schools located at the heart of the Imphal City.

Incriminating articles along with one receipt book of Kangleipak Student Association (KSA) were seized from Anilkumar`™s possession. Investigation also revealed that both the arrested persons were involved in extortion and collection of huge amount of money from the general public, government offices, private schools, etc. in the name of URF. A case has been registered at Lamlai Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.
