MLA assures turning Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Andro into model KGBV

IMPHAL, February 3: Andro MLA Shyamkumar today pledged to mould the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, KGBV, Andro into a model KGBV in the country by introducing extra-curricular activities like games and sports and vocational training into its curriculum.

He further sought assistance from both the State and Central government for his endeavour.

The MLA was speaking to media persons during an inspection of the development works undertaken in the school.

He said extra-curricular activities for the girl students will be added starting from March this year.

Elaborating further he said, the courses to be added will include disciplines of games- boxing, football, athletics, individual games- and other vocational trainings like tailoring and embroidery.

All such extra-curricular activities will be introduced in other schools of the area including the Moirangpurel Government High School, Poreikhongjil Government High School, Top Chingtha Primary School etc.

He continued that he has been staying at the school premise since yesterday overlooking the ongoing works.

Construction of the school building and class rooms are almost completed with the aim of completing the whole construction work by March this year, the local MLA told the media persons adding at the same time that he is planning to conduct a training programme for teachers of government schools in the constituency soon.

He elaborated that the teachers will be trained on how to teach the students, and to maintain a healthy surrounding by seeking help from experts from the Manipur University and others.

The school building including class rooms has been completed under the financial assistance of the Centre under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, however, the government has provided no sanction for the school fencing, computer classes and playground, which will be constructed from his MLA Local Area Development Fund, he said.

Shyamkumar further appealed to the State and Central government to upgrade the KGBV to a higher secondary school as it has classes from only Class VI to VIII. Students who have competed Class VIII from the school are admitted for their higher studies at the Moirangpurel Government High School, he added.

Most students studying in the school are from poor families and most of them leave school due after completing Class VIII due to financial constraints, he continued.

The school, he said covers 10 constituencies of the district and further requested the concerned department and minister to provide more financial support for the development of the school infrastructure.

As schools are considered to be the temple of learning, every school must have proper playground, garden, proper and separate toilets for boys and girls, he continued.

The MLA also asserted that he had already announced that his constituency will provide atleast nine top 10 position holders in the 2017 HSLC examination in the State.

He further lauded the State Education minister and the concerned department for filling up the vacant teachers of his constituency.
