IMPHAL, Feb 23: A State cabinet meeting held today discussed thoroughly the bill to implement a law to safeguard the indigenous people of Manipur, which will be tabled in the ensuing Assembly session.
The cabinet meeting was held today at 3 pm at the Chief Minister`™s Secretariat chaired by CM O Ibobi Singh.
Government spokesperson Moirangthem Okendro, who also holds the Education, CAF & PD portfolios, said that the State government seriously considers the people`™s emotion as well as the demand by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System to enact a law in order to safeguard the indigenous population.
The government also clearly understands the need for it, he added.
He further said the government is planning to table `The Manipur regulation of visitors and tenants bill, 2015` in the ensuing Assembly session, considering the people`™s demand.
However, even if we want to enact a law as quickly as possible in order to safeguard the indigenous population, things cannot be done hastily as we need to consider whether the said law will create problem from other communities, the spokesperson said.
In order to make the bill to be tabled in the Assembly session more complete and fulfilling, we need to consult constitutional experts as well as other experts, he informed.
It may be mentioned here that the committee of All Political Party on ILP System had submitted a report containing 280 pages to the State government regarding the matter after investigation for five months on December 10 last.
The Assembly session which will commence on February 25 is a short duration session. In this session current financial year 2014-15 revised estimate and next financial year 2015-16 budget estimate will be tabled for voice vote.
