IMPHAL February 12: The inaugural function of the three-day Umanglai Haraoba (Kanglei) festival was held today at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound. The festival is being organised by Umanglai Kanba Apunba Lup.

Speaking as the chief guest of the function, deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said Manipur can become one of the tourist destination during its Lai Haroaba festivals as it would attract tourists from different parts of the country. It will also be known throughout the world for its distinct and unique culture, customs and traditions, he added.

He also stated that the Lai Haroaba festival is not meant only for the Meeteis but for people in both the hills and valley.

Gaikhangam appealed the people to have religious tolerance, believe in secularism and also to protect and preserve the customs and traditions of Lai Haroaba.

In his speech at the function, Parliamentary Secretary (MI and IPR) K Meghachandra Singh lauded UKAL for its contribution in preserving and protecting the old tradition of Lai Haraoba.

The function was also attended by Kangjiya Mangang, Retd Principal and Chairman, Organising Committee.
