IMPHAL, March 31: The Lamlai constituency clubs have demand PHED to provide potable water to the people after a government order has restricted to private water supply in the area.
Addressing a press meet held at the Yourabung this morning after the executive engineer Imphal East PHED notified restriction on private water pumping stations in the around the Iril and Imphal Rivers from March 25.
A representative of the clubs, Dhanshor said that from the very beginning private water distributors were the only way water was reached to all villages under Lamlai constituency. But recently the order from the executive engineers has stopped all pumping station and thus created water scarcity in the area.
He said for the last 26 years, as the PHED was not bothered about the failure of water supply schemes in the area, private suppliers stepped in. Now, only after the state began facing an alarming drought situation, the official banned on pumping stations has come about, putting the people of the area in a quandary.
If the concerned department does not provide water supply to the people from tomorrow, the clubs and organisations of Lamlai will launch severe agitations against the State government, warned Dhaneshor.
Meanwhile Mongjam Poreihanba Social workers and Convenor RTI Cell BJP Manipur Pradesh said that there are four water supply schemes in Lamlai constituency at Pungdongbam, Nongada, Nungoi Pourabi and Kakui Khunjao.
These schemes have not been functioning since many years. Two more schemes have been approved at Takhel Maning and Mongrel Maning since five years back, but construction work remain incomplete.
He further said that if such restricting is necessary, then the PHED must arrange to provide drinking water to the people of the area.
He said that the concern authority are asked to provide sufficient water to the people, if the department fails, as a convenor of the RTI Cell BJP Manipur Pradesh, along with other party leaders of Manipur will complain to the centre leaders. If necessary the party will take the matter to the High Court and even to the Supreme Court, he added.
If the concerned minister and authority along MLAs of the Kendra can`™t provide water to the people, they should resign from their posts on moral ground, demanded M Poreihanba.
