Consumer Court revived after 15 years

IMPHAL, April 11: After lying defunct for nearly 15 years, the Manipur State Consumers Redressal Commission has been revived February 1, 2015. The office of the Commission is opened presently at Old Assembly complex, Imphal West.

The President of the Commission and other judicial members has the authority to redress complaints arising from all kinds of services availed by a consumer like banking sector, Insurance companies, Airlines, Vehicular Transport, Medical, Legal and other professions , breach of contract, Television network, Telephone, Carrier Act etc.

Defects in purchase of articles, sale of sub-standard goods, violation of warranty period, purchase of goods from the Government and sponsored firms, companies etc. purchase of flats, misleading advertisements , unfair trade practice can be brought up to the attention of the district or State consumer commission. The state commission can fine the errant company/firm etc. to an amount of 1 crore and the district level commission can settle cases for less than 20 lacs and as pertaining to the nature of the complaint.

At present, there are 33 pending cases in the State Commission and four cases have been disposed since the beginning of February 1 last.
