Police seize truck carrying contraband ganja

IMPHAL, May 5: Bishnupur district commandos have seized a truck carrying contraband ganja and arrested its driver and handyman.

According to a PRO police statement, a team of District Police Commando Bishnupur was conducted patrolling at Santhong Makha Leikai IV road area on May 2.

During the patrolling, the team saw a Tata truck bearing registered no. WB15A-5691 coming from the opposite direction in a suspicious manner, it said.

It continued that the said truck was stopped by the team and on checking found 213.05 kg of contraband ganja. The drug was seized by the team and the driver and handyman, Mithum mandal alias Mintu, 36, son of Fakir Mandal and Salam Sheikh, 26, son of Kalam Sheikh of 14 mile Murshidabad, West Bengal were arrested, it said.

A case has been registered at Moirang Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

The statement also said that in another operation, a combined team of Bishnupur District Police Commando and 34 Assam Rifles conducted a search operation at Wangoo Sabal area and arrested one active member of UNLF organisation, namely Pukhrambam Rabi Singh alias Naopik alias Kheng, 25, son of P. Ninghtemani Singh if Wangoo Sabal Awang Leikai. A case has been registered at Kumbi Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

The PRO police has also stated that Imphal West Police Commando conducted frisking and checking operation today in front of Chingamakha Model Club based on a reliable information about the presence of some active cadres of PREPAK (PPRO) organisation with a view to commit pre-judicial activities like extortion of money from general public, government officials and businessman in Singjamei area.

During the frisking, two active members of PREPAK (PRO) organisation namely, Md. Iliyash Khan, 40, son of (l) Md. Jahir Ali of Yairipok Shinga Idiga Maya and Thounaojam Suresh Singh, 36, son of Th. Raghumani Singh of Yairipok Bishnu Naha Siphai Leikai were arrested, it said.

Investigation revealed that they came to extort money for party fund from government officials at Chingamakha area, it said.

A case has been registered at Singjamei Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.
