IMPHAL, June 29: Tension gripped Palace Gate area in Imphal East when a VDF personnel who was on duty at the crossing of RDS School near Thangal General Traffic Island fired a bullet from a service rifle issued to him.
According to reports, the incident occurred today around 12.30 pm when the VDF personal stopped a Tata truck coming from Checkon side for checking. As told by the personal, driver of the truck alighted from the vehicle.
However, the VDF personal pointing his service rifle down came nearby the driver and fired a round of bullet, triggering panic in the area.
On hearing the gunshot, nearby residents and commuters rushed to the spot to ascertain what was happening.
Shortly, a team of Porompat Police coming in a DI Tata vehicle came in and took away the VDF personal along with others personnel who were on duty in the area when the incident took place.
The Tata truck which was stopped by the VDF personal was also taken away by the police team, the reports stated.
Taking strong exception to the incident, nearby residents and commuters who witnessed the episode expressed strong discontentment over the act of the VDF personnel.
