Educational institutions closed down temporarily

IMPHAL, July 8: In view of the deteriorating law and order situation arising out of ILP agitation and unfortunate use of students as fronts for agitation, the Governor has ordered temporary closure of all educational institutions including all Higher Secondary Schools, High Schools, Junior/Upper Primary/Primary Schools located in Greater Imphal area with immediate effect and until further orders.

An order signed by L Nandakumar Singh, Deputy Secretary (Education/S) in the name of Governor said the government has noted with deep concern the disturbance of the normal functioning of schools in Imphal by the resurgent agitations demanding Inner Line Permit System for Manipur.

The government deeply mourns and regrets the unfortunate demise of a boy student of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy reportedly in connection with the agitations and the reported counter actions by the state police, which also resulted in injuries to many students/agitators today. The government also sincerely regret the unwarranted use of students and many injuries to students today and appeal to all concerned, particularly the various organizations spearheading the ILP agitations to immediately desist from such acts of using the students community for their ulterior motives, it said.

Stating that the temporary closure of educational institutions in Greater Imphal area was enforced considering the gravity, the sensitive nature and the adverse implication of the situation, the order declared that the government has also imposed restrictions in the movement and assembly of persons to prevent further aggravation of the law & order in Imphal area.
