PREPAK calls for elimination of violence against women

IMPHAL, November 24: Expressing grave concern on the ever increasing violence against women in the State, the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) has pledged to counter the menace with support from the public.

According to a statement issued by Leibakngakpa Luwang, Assistant Secretary, Publicity and Propaganda of PREPAK, the alarming incident of violence against women taking place every now and then in the State has greatly affected peace and tranquillity in the region besides threatening security and modesty of women.

It said time has come for the people to initiate effective measures to eradicate the raging violence against women and secure them in the society sensing the core value of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women observation.

Though India had implemented Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 from October 16, 2006 as per ‘Convention of all forms of discrimination against women’ framed by United Nations (UN), various form of violence against women in the country has not been reduced, PREPAK in its statement pointed out.

The outfit claimed that there had been 1600 incidents of violence against women in the State during the year 2005-15, calling for serious prompt intervention so as to deter the menace.

Moreover, the number of rape incident took place in the State in 2008 was 38, 53 in 2011, 63 in 2012, 73 in 2013 and 75 in 2014 showing stark contrast with the number of rape incident occurred in other States of the country, it said.
