Orange growers protest on the eve of Orange festival

IMPHAL, December 8: Over 200 orange growers today staged a protest demonstration in front of the bungalow of the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong demanding increase in the incentives for the orange growers on the eve of the festival.

According to the protestors the current incentive of Rs 2500 was too low to meet the requirement of the needy growers and demanded the incentive to be increased to Rs 5000.

The protestors further threatened not to participate in tomorrow’s festival if their demand is not met.

Meanwhile, all necessary arrangement had been made including heavy security for the smooth celebration of the 12th State Level Orange Festivals under the theme “Orange for peace and Prosperity” which will be held tomorrow at Tamenglong district head quarters lower ground.

The programme will be opened by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh as the chief guest and deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as the chief host. Cabinets Ministers, MLAs, Parliamentary Secretary, leaders of civil society organisation will also attend the celebration.

More than 300 orange stalls will be opened during the festival. Orange growers competition, cultural extravaganza, orange queen contest, musical and choreography competition, traditional shows will mark the festival.
