IMPHAL, Jan 30: Janata Dal (United) president M Tombi today said the Sanjit killing case should be handed over to the National Investigation Agency since one of the main accused head constable Thounaojam Herojit had confessed to shooting Sanjit following direct orders from a superior officer.

Speaking to media persons in a press meet held today at the office of the JD (U), Tombi said the case should be handed over to the NIA for a thorough investigation.

He demanded a clarification from the State government on the July 23, 2009 BT Road killing.

Six years after the incident which has already been investigated by the CBI, Herojit who is one of the main accused has come out clean before media persons confessing that he had shot Sanjit who was unarmed at the moment, he said.

He further said that since Herojit has claimed that Imphal West SP Dr Ak Jhaljit who was the then Additional SP had given the order to shoot Sanjit, the SP should cooperate in the investigation and should be kept in suspension during the investigation period.

Tombi also demanded that similar action should be initiated against the then DGP Y Joykumar who is now a member of the BJP Manipur. He said the BJP should expel the former DGP from primary membership of the party in the interest of the public.

At the same time, the Centre and State government should provide protection to Herojit who is also a witness of the case, he said.

JD (U) general secretary (organisation) Lien Gangte said the party will take part in the February 6 mass rally organised by various civil organisations including UCM, AMUCO and CCMCA.

The mass rally has been organised to encourage peace and harmony among the hills and valley people of the State, he said appealing to the people to participate in the rally.

He said a mass congregation of people from the different communities of the State will show the unity of the people.
