Ready to provide security if Herojit desires: Gaikhangam

IMPHAL, January 30: Security will be provided to Manipur Police head constable Thounaojam Herojit if he applies for it; however, he is yet to seek security from the State government, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who also holds the Home portfolio told media persons today.

Speaking in the sideline of the 68th Martyr Day observation at the Congress Bhawan today, Gaikhangam said if the need arise and if Herojit feels like having security, we are ready to provide security to him who is himself a security personnel of the State.

On the indefinite blockade called by the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and the Kuki Students’ Organisation starting midnight of February 1, the Home minister said it is a wrong measure taken up by the student bodies.

If the demand is reasonable, the government is always open for talks, he added.

Earlier during the Martyr Day observation, floral tributes were paid to a portrait of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

A state-level observation of the day was also held at the Gandhi Memorial Hall this morning organised by the State government.

The function was attended by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, council of ministers, MLAs and other high ranking officials of various departments who paid floral tribute to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi as a mark of respect.

A two-minute silence was also observed during function.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said that we respect the father of the nation and is observing the 68th Martyr Day.

The main objective of the observation is to remember the father of the nation’s struggle for Independence of the country against the mighty British Empire.

This is the right time for today’s youth to inculcate Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology, he said.
